Valley Stream was settled in the 1830s by Robert Pagan and named for the numerous scenic streams and mill ponds feeding into Jamaica Bay. Incorporated in 1925, it flourished as a prime commuter suburb and is home to the historic Valley Stream State Park and the expansive Green Acres Mall.
