Bethpage was established under the 1695 Bethpage Purchase by Quaker Thomas Powell. During the Space Race, Bethpage served as the global headquarters for Grumman Aerospace, where engineers designed and assembled the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) that landed humans on the Moon. It is also famous for Bethpage State Park and its legendary Black Course.
