North Babylon was settled in colonial times and was historically dominated by agricultural farms and the extensive Belmont estate. It is famous for Belmont Lake State Park, a 463-acre recreational state park developed in the 1920s by Robert Moses around a 19th-century mill pond, serving as the Long Island regional headquarters of the state park commission.
