Huntington Station developed rapidly around the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1867, serving as the commercial depot for the Town of Huntington. It is internationally celebrated as the birthplace of legendary American poet Walt Whitman, whose 1819 historic farmhouse birthplace is preserved as a State Historic Site.
