Mastic was settled in the early 18th century along the Forge River and Moriches Bay. It was the ancestral seat of General Nathaniel Woodhull and William Floyd, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, whose historic 1724 estate is preserved as part of Fire Island National Seashore.
