Upton is the historic military and scientific reservation in central Brookhaven, founded during World War I as Camp Upton to train American infantrymen (including composer Irving Berlin). In 1947, the site was transformed into the world-renowned Brookhaven National Laboratory, a premier nuclear and particle physics research institute that has yielded seven Nobel Prizes.
