Settled in the mid-17th century and historically known as Hicks Neck and Bethel, Baldwin was renamed after early civic leader Thomas Baldwin in 1855. Situated along the South Shore with access to Parsonage Cove and Middle Bay, Baldwin flourished as an oyster harvesting, milling, and agricultural community before becoming a bustling transit-oriented residential hub on the Long Island Rail Road.
