Calverton was established in the 18th century and named in honor of surveyor Bernard J. Calvert. During the Cold War, Calverton was the site of the Grumman Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, where supersonic F-14 Tomcat fighter jets were assembled and flight-tested. It is also home to the Calverton National Cemetery.
