Central Islip was settled in the mid-19th century and became nationally prominent as the site of the Central Islip Psychiatric Center. Following the facility’s closure, the area was redeveloped into a major judicial and academic hub, housing the Alfonse M. D’Amato U.S. Courthouse, Touro Law Center, and Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
