Farmingdale was settled in the late 17th century and originally called Hardscrabble before being renamed in the 1840s to emphasize fertile farming soils. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road established it as an agricultural and manufacturing depot. Today, Farmingdale boasts a nationally recognized, walkable downtown Main Street dining district.
