Franklin Square originated as a colonial farming settlement on the Hempstead Plains in the late 1700s, named in honor of Benjamin Franklin. Settled predominantly by German immigrant farmers in the 19th century, it features the historic 1852 Plattduetsche Park Clubhouse, historic bakeries, and suburban residential avenues.
