Holtsville was originally known as Waverly before being renamed in 1860 in honor of Postmaster General Joseph Holt. It is widely known for the Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve, a popular educational center housing over 100 rescued animals, greenhouse botanical gardens, and community nature trails.
