Originally founded in 1873 as Breslau by German developer Charles S. Schleier, Lindenhurst was renamed in 1891 in honor of local linden trees. Incorporated as a village in 1923, Lindenhurst developed as an industrial and embroidery manufacturing center on the South Shore, renowned for waterfront canals and coastal living.
