Orient was settled in 1661 as Oysterponds and renamed Orient in 1836 to reflect its position as the easternmost point of the North Fork. It features a remarkably preserved historic district, pristine farmsteads, and the Orient Point ferry terminal connecting Long Island across the Sound to New England.
