The Town of Shelter Island was established in 1652 and chartered in 1730, situated between the North and South Forks of Long Island in the Peconic Bay. Historically inhabited by the Manhanset tribe and later settled as a Quaker refuge, it is accessible only by ferry and celebrated for conservation preserves like Mashomack Preserve.
